A Look at the Style Behind The Royal Palm
Some architectural styles are trends. Palm Beach style is a tradition — one with more than a century of history behind it, and one that never seems to go out of fashion because it was never really in fashion to begin with. It's a way of building that grew directly out of Florida itself: the light, the breeze, the palms, and a belief that a home should feel both gracious and effortless.
At Heritage Builders, we've long admired this tradition, and we're thrilled to be bringing it to Sarasota's bayfront with our newest custom home, **The Royal Palm**, breaking ground this summer with completion anticipated in 2027. Before we introduce the home itself, we wanted to take a moment to explore the style that inspired it.
A Style Born on an Island
Palm Beach's design identity traces back to the early 1900s, when architect Addison Mizner reimagined the island in a romantic Mediterranean vocabulary — arched loggias, stucco walls, barrel-tile roofs, and courtyards that blurred the line between indoors and out. That founding vision was layered over the decades with other influences: the stately British West Indies look, with its shuttered windows and deep verandas; mid-century glamour; and, most recently, a clean-lined coastal sophistication that defines today's finest new construction.
What unites all of these threads is a certain attitude. Palm Beach style is coastal, but it is never casual in the beach-cottage sense. There's no shiplap here, no anchors on the wall. Instead, there is craftsmanship, proportion, and a quiet sense of occasion — rooms designed to be lived in beautifully, every single day.
The Hallmarks of Palm Beach-Inspired Design
You know a Palm Beach-inspired home the moment you see one. A few signatures to look for:
· Crisp white architecture with soft coastal accents
· Bermuda shutters in blues or greens, garage and entry doors in rich warm wood tones.
· Louvered shutters angled to catch the breeze and intricate lattice-pattern balcony railings are two of the style's most beloved details.
· Arched entries, columned balconies, and hipped rooflines give these homes a composed, timeless presence on the street.
· Deep covered porches, balconies off the bedrooms, and living spaces that open wide to pool terraces and loggias.
· Light-filled, layered interiors with natural materials like wide-plank oak, natural stone, linen, and rattan, with soaring ceilings.
· Inside, the palette stays serene — warm whites, sand, and driftwood tones.
Timeless by Design
The reason Palm Beach style endures is simple: it was designed for exactly the way we live here — welcoming the breeze, celebrating the light, and treating every day like a beautiful occasion. The Royal Palm carries that century-old tradition forward with the craftsmanship and attention to detail that define every Heritage Builders home.
